Scientific publishing on rise as patents struggle

Date:
Monday, February 13, 2012
WHILE SA has been struggling to improve its patent record, scientific publications have increased, a sign that the country’s innovation and research and development capacity is growing. SA’s scientific publications have increased 60% since 1994, according to a report in the South African Journal of Science published last year. David Kaplan, a professor at the University of Cape Town’s economics department, concurs, saying "in publications we’re doing well because there are clear incentives for academics to publish (their scientific papers)".
